The Westside Youth Athletic Association (WSYAA or any youth athletic program) is among the most worthwhile charities that anyone can participate.  The Westside Community has long been forgotten with regard to youth athletic facilities.  With only two baseball fields for more than 31 boys and girls youth teams, we were in crisis mode.

As a WSYAA board member, I contributed hundreds of hours in building a first rate website for the community to use.  As part of the campaign to draw attention to the plight of Westside Youth, we used the website as a communication tool for local parents and youth.  The website became an important vehicle for communication and was used as leverage to convince Whitfield County Commissioners of the need to build Westside Athletic facilities.

In 2007, I created and uploaded an online petition to the WSYAA website that parents could fill out with their names, addresses, contact info, and comments to commissioners.  When the form was submitted it was automatically emailed to each county commissioner.  More than 1000 petitions were submitted to commissioners within 3 weeks. Commissioners were convinced of the need for Westside fields (these are now under construction).  Later, the Whitfield County Commission used this same strategy to get input on surveys (on their own County website) about the need for more County Recreation facilities.  This concept had never before been used to empower local voters to pressure elected officials.  Communication can be a powerful tool.
